山西省缔结国际友好城市始於1981年10月16日，省轄市大同市與日本福岡縣大牟田市締結省內首對友好城市。截至2024年3月26日，山西省及其下辖各地、县级行政区已与31个国家建立64对友好城市。其中，亚洲有11个国家、17对友好城市；北美洲有1个国家、9对友好城市；南美洲有1个国家、1对友好城市；欧洲有12个国家、28对友好城市；非洲有4个国家、5对友好城市；大洋洲有2个国家、4对友好城市。省级友好城市有19对，地级友好城市有36对，县级友好城市有9对。
