上标和下标是一个位于基本多文种平面的Unicode区块，包含了上标和下标数字、数学运算符以及数学和语音学中使用的字母。使用本区块中的下标和上标可以使任何多项式、化学方程式和某些其他方程式在纯文本中得到表示，而不需要使用任何形式的标记语言，如HTML或TeX。其他的上标字母可以在占位修饰符号、音标扩展和音标扩展补充区块中找到，而自ISO 8859-1继承而来的上标数字1、2和3则位于拉丁字母补充-1区块中。
