該航班於上午10:33從加德滿都布萬國際機場起飛。[1]事故發生前飛機正在博卡拉國際機場短五邊進近，在塞蒂甘達基河岸邊墜毀。 據地面人員拍攝的視頻顯示，飛機在墜毀前突然向左傾斜。 [2]另一段視頻來自飛機上的一名名叫Sonu Jaiswal的乘客在降落前斷開飛行模式在Facebook直播時的錄像。[3]該視頻顯示，乘客在撞擊前幾秒鐘才意識到飛機將要墜毀。[4]

據博卡拉國際機場的一位發言人稱，空中交通管制部門批准該航班在由東向西的30號跑道上降落，但在墜機前幾分鐘，機長要求使用由西向東的12號跑道。尼泊爾民航局的一位發言人說。" 事發當天天氣晴朗；根據初步信息，墜機的原因是飛機的技術問題" 。[11]
Flightradar24稱，在飛行期間，因該涉事飛機設備老舊導致其ADS-B數據一直在傳輸不準確的速度和高度數據。[12]

一個由Nagendra Ghimire領導的五人委員會正在為尼泊爾政府調查這起事故，法國民航安全調查分析局也將協助調查。[13]
阿米特·辛格是一名經驗豐富的飛行員，也是印度安全事務基金會的創始人，他推測，在墜機前一刻和乘客Sonu Jaiswal在墜機過程中拍攝直播顯示，飛機的機頭明顯偏高，然後左翼突然下陷，隨後飛機跌出攝像頭範圍內，可能表明飛機已經失速。 [14]一位發言人說，在飛機進近過程中，飛行員沒有報告「任何不正常的情況」。[15]
1月16日，飛行數據記錄器和座艙通話記錄器被找到，並無太大的損壞。[16]應尼泊爾調查機構的要求，這兩個記錄器將被送往新加坡解碼。[17][18]
