她出生於英國倫敦漢普斯特德花園郊區^[1]^[3]，父親是意大利猶太人，猶太人大屠殺倖存者，母親是蘇格蘭人^[4]，其母在她一歲時皈依猶太教^[5]，她自己也是一個改良猶太教信徒，曾就讀於薩塞克斯大學法語文學專業和密德薩斯大學電影錄像專業^[3]。她早期靠拍攝《觀察家報》、飛利浦等公司的商業宣傳片謀生，其電影處女作是《情人最愛》（1998）^[6]
